Time to Go Home

Read the Story

Jacob had worked for Laban for twenty years. Laban was not kind to him anymore. God told Jacob to go back to his home land, and promised to be with him.

Jacob packed up his wives, children, sheep, goats and camels. They left without telling Laban. When Laban found out, he chased after them.

God spoke to Laban in a dream and told him not to hurt Jacob. Laban and Jacob talked. They piled up stones and made a promise to be at peace. Then Laban kissed his grandchildren and went home.

A Covenant of Peace

Name Date

Read the Story

Jacob noticed that Laban no longer looked at him kindly. The Lord said, Return to the land of your fathers, and to your relatives, and I will be with you. Jacob told Rachel and Leah how God had protected him, even though Laban changed his wages ten times. They agreed to go.

Jacob left secretly while Laban was away shearing sheep. Rachel stole her father's household idols. After three days Laban heard and chased them for seven days. But God came to Laban in a dream and warned him not to say anything good or bad to Jacob, meaning not to harm him. Laban searched for his idols but did not find them, because Rachel had hidden them.

Jacob told Laban how hard he had worked and said that if God had not been with him, Laban would have sent him away empty. They made a covenant, set up a stone pillar and a heap of stones, and ate together. Laban said, Yahweh watch between me and you. In the morning Laban blessed his family and returned home.

Genesis 31 · Grade 4

God Was With Jacob

Name Date

Read and Think

After twenty years, God told Jacob it was time to go home. Laban had cheated Jacob many times, but Jacob could now see God's hand. He told his wives that God had not allowed Laban to harm him and that God had given him the flocks.

Jacob still struggled with fear. Instead of saying goodbye openly, he slipped away. Rachel also did wrong by stealing her father's idols. These idols show that Laban's household did not fully worship the true God. They would later need to be put away (Genesis 35:2).

God kept His promise to be with Jacob. He stopped Laban with a warning dream. Jacob said that if the God of his father had not been with him, Laban would have sent him away empty. The two men made peace, and Jacob continued toward the land God had promised.

  2. How did Jacob's fear show?

Genesis 31 · Grade 5

The Fear of Isaac

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 31 marks the turning point of Jacob's exile. Laban's sons grumble, Laban's face changes, and God speaks: Return to the land of your fathers, and to your relatives, and I will be with you. These words echo the Bethel promise. Jacob explains to Rachel and Leah that God has protected him from Laban's repeated cheating and has transferred the flocks to him, as God revealed in a dream. The sisters, also cheated by their father, agree.

Jacob flees secretly, and Rachel steals the household gods (teraphim). Laban pursues, but God intervenes in a dream: Be careful that you don't speak to Jacob either good or bad. Laban's search for his gods is almost comic: they cannot protect themselves and are hidden under a camel's saddle. Scripture mocks idols that must be carried and guarded.

Jacob's speech recounts twenty years of faithful labor through heat by day and frost by night. He concludes, Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty. The two men raise a pillar and a heap of witness stones, called Mizpah: Yahweh watch between me and you. This was not a sweet blessing but a boundary marker between two men who did not trust each other. God's protection brings Jacob safely out of Paddan Aram.

Show What You Know

  1. What earlier promise do God's words in verse 3 echo?

  2. How does the search for Laban's gods show the foolishness of idols?

  3. What names for God does Jacob use in verse 42?

  4. What was the real meaning of the Mizpah covenant?

  5. Who truly protected Jacob during his twenty years with Laban?

Think About It

  1. Jacob worked faithfully even for a dishonest boss. How can you work faithfully even when it's hard?

  2. Idols had to be carried and hidden. How is the living God different from anything people trust instead of Him?

Memory Verse

Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty. God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night.”
