Genesis 31 · Grade 4
God Was With Jacob
Read and Think
After twenty years, God told Jacob it was time to go home. Laban had cheated Jacob many times, but Jacob could now see God's hand. He told his wives that God had not allowed Laban to harm him and that God had given him the flocks.
Jacob still struggled with fear. Instead of saying goodbye openly, he slipped away. Rachel also did wrong by stealing her father's idols. These idols show that Laban's household did not fully worship the true God. They would later need to be put away (Genesis 35:2).
God kept His promise to be with Jacob. He stopped Laban with a warning dream. Jacob said that if the God of his father had not been with him, Laban would have sent him away empty. The two men made peace, and Jacob continued toward the land God had promised.

“Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty. God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night.””
