Genesis 3 · Grade 3

Sin Enters the World

Name Date

Read the Story

The serpent was crafty. He asked Eve, Has God really said, You shall not eat of any tree of the garden? Then he told her that if she ate the forbidden fruit, she would not die but would be like God. That was a lie.

Eve saw that the fruit looked good, so she ate some and gave some to Adam, who was with her. Right away they knew they were naked, and they felt ashamed. When they heard God walking in the garden, they hid. Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the serpent.

Sin brought sad results: pain, hard work, and death. Adam and Eve had to leave the garden. But God made them clothes from animal skins, and He gave a promise: one of the woman's children would crush the serpent's head. Christians have read this as the first promise of the Savior, Jesus.

Memory Verse

I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.”

Genesis 3:15 (WEB)

Genesis 3 · Grade 4

The Fall and the First Promise

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 3 explains why the world is broken. The serpent twisted God's words and made God seem unkind. He told Eve she would not die but would be like God. Eve trusted the serpent's word instead of God's. She ate the fruit and gave some to Adam, and he ate too.

Right away things changed. Adam and Eve felt shame and tried to cover themselves with fig leaves. When God came walking in the garden, they hid. God asked, Where are you? Of course God knew where they were; He was inviting them to come and confess. Instead, Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the serpent.

God judged the sin. Life would now include pain, hard work, and death, and Adam and Eve were sent out of Eden. But even in judgment God showed grace. He made garments of skin to clothe them, and He promised that the woman's offspring would crush the serpent's head. Christians have read this as the first promise of Jesus, who defeated sin and Satan.

  1. How did the serpent tempt Eve?

  2. What did Adam and Eve do when they heard God in the garden?

Genesis 3 · Grade 5

Temptation, Sin and Grace

Name Date

Read and Think

The serpent's first words were a question that made Eve doubt what God had said. Temptation often begins by making us doubt God's word and God's goodness. The serpent then directly contradicted God: You won't really die. Eve saw that the fruit was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable to make one wise. She ate, and Adam, who was with her, ate too.

Sin immediately broke relationships. Adam and Eve were ashamed before each other, so they sewed fig leaves together. They were afraid of God, so they hid. When questioned, they shifted blame: Adam to Eve (and even to God, who gave her), and Eve to the serpent. Sin separates us from God and from one another.

God pronounced judgment: the serpent was cursed, the woman would have pain in childbirth, the ground was cursed so that work would be hard, and people would return to dust. Yet God also gave hope. In verse 15 He promised that the woman's offspring would crush the serpent's head, though the serpent would bruise his heel. God clothed Adam and Eve with garments of skin, covering their shame. Then He sent them out of Eden, guarding the way to the tree of life.

Show What You Know

  1. How did the serpent's temptation begin, and why does that matter?

  2. What three things attracted Eve to the fruit?

  3. Give two relationships that sin broke right away.

  4. What is promised in Genesis 3:15?

  5. What did God do to cover Adam and Eve's shame?
