Genesis 3 · Grade 5
Temptation, Sin and Grace
Read and Think
The serpent's first words were a question that made Eve doubt what God had said. Temptation often begins by making us doubt God's word and God's goodness. The serpent then directly contradicted God: You won't really die. Eve saw that the fruit was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable to make one wise. She ate, and Adam, who was with her, ate too.
Sin immediately broke relationships. Adam and Eve were ashamed before each other, so they sewed fig leaves together. They were afraid of God, so they hid. When questioned, they shifted blame: Adam to Eve (and even to God, who gave her), and Eve to the serpent. Sin separates us from God and from one another.
God pronounced judgment: the serpent was cursed, the woman would have pain in childbirth, the ground was cursed so that work would be hard, and people would return to dust. Yet God also gave hope. In verse 15 He promised that the woman's offspring would crush the serpent's head, though the serpent would bruise his heel. God clothed Adam and Eve with garments of skin, covering their shame. Then He sent them out of Eden, guarding the way to the tree of life.
