Jacob Works for Rachel

Name Date

Read the Story

Jacob came to a well. Some shepherds were there. Then Rachel came with her father's sheep. Jacob rolled the big stone off the well and gave her sheep water.

Rachel's father was Laban, Jacob's uncle. Jacob loved Rachel. He offered to work seven years so he could marry Rachel. Seven years felt like just a few days because he loved her so much.

But Laban played a trick. He gave Jacob Rachel's older sister, Leah, instead. Jacob had tricked his own father, and now he was tricked. Jacob worked seven more years for Rachel. God saw that Leah was sad, and God was kind to her.

Memory Verse

“Jacob served seven years for Rachel. They seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had for her.”

The Deceiver Is Deceived

Name Date

Read the Story

Jacob came to the land of the people of the east. At a well, shepherds told him they knew Laban. Just then Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess. Jacob rolled the stone from the well, watered her flock, kissed her and wept. Laban ran to meet him and welcomed him home.

Laban had two daughters, Leah and Rachel. Jacob loved Rachel and offered to serve Laban seven years for her. Those years seemed like a few days because of his love. But on the wedding night Laban gave him Leah instead. Laban said, It is not done so in our place, to give the younger before the firstborn. Jacob served another seven years for Rachel.

The Lord saw that Leah was not loved as much, and He gave her children. She named her sons Reuben, Simeon and Levi, hoping her husband would love her. With her fourth son she said, This time I will praise Yahweh, and named him Judah.

Memory Verse

“Jacob served seven years for Rachel. They seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had for her.”

Genesis 29 · Grade 4

Reaping What You Sow

Name Date

Read and Think

When Jacob arrived in Haran, he met Rachel at a well and immediately helped her. He worked seven years for her, and the time flew by because he loved her. But Laban, his uncle, turned out to be a schemer just like Jacob had been.

Jacob had deceived his father by pretending to be the older brother. Now Laban deceived him by giving him the older sister. In the New Testament, Galatians 6:7 teaches that a person reaps what he sows. Jacob was learning what it feels like to be tricked.

Leah's story is tender. She longed for her husband's love, and each son's name shows her hope. But God saw her. By her fourth son, Judah, Leah's focus turned from her husband to God: This time I will praise Yahweh. Through Judah would come King David. In the New Testament, Jesus is from Judah's family line.

Show What You Know

  1. How was Laban's trick like Jacob's own past?

  2. What does Galatians 6:7 teach?

  3. How did Leah's focus change by her fourth son?

  4. Who would come from Judah's family?

Think About It

  1. Leah found comfort in praising God. When you feel unloved, how can turning to God help?

  2. Has anyone ever treated you the way you once treated someone else? What did you learn?

Memory Verse

“She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, “This time I will praise Yahweh.” Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing.”

Genesis 29 · Grade 5

Leah Praises the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 29 shows God's providence leading Jacob, just as it led Abraham's servant, to a well where he meets the right family. Jacob shows strength and eagerness, rolling the heavy stone from the well alone, and serves Laban seven years for Rachel. They seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had for her.

Then the deceiver is deceived. Laban substitutes Leah for Rachel at the wedding, and Jacob's protest, Why then have you deceived me? echoes the very word used of his own deception of Isaac. Laban's reply about the firstborn stings, because Jacob had pushed ahead of his firstborn brother. God was disciplining Jacob through the consequences of his choices, shaping him over many years.

Genesis presents the sorrow of this divided household honestly. Leah was unloved, but the Lord saw her. Her sons' names trace her hopes: Reuben (see, a son), Simeon (heard), Levi (attached). With Judah (praise), she turns from seeking her husband's affection to worshiping God. In grace, God chose Leah's son Judah, not Rachel's son Joseph, as the line of kings (Genesis 49:10).

Show What You Know

  1. How does this chapter echo Genesis 24?

  2. Why did Laban's words about the firstborn sting Jacob?

  3. How was God working through Jacob's hard experience?

  4. What does the name Judah mean, and why is it significant?

  5. How did God show grace to Leah through Judah?
