God Is With You

Name Date

Read the Story

Jacob had to leave home. He walked a long way. When the sun went down, he lay down to sleep outside. He used a stone for a pillow.

Jacob had a dream. He saw a stairway that reached all the way to heaven. Angels were going up and down on it. The Lord stood above it and promised to be with Jacob and keep him wherever he went.

Jacob woke up and said, Surely Yahweh is in this place. He set up his stone pillow as a marker. He named the place Bethel, which means house of God.

Memory Verse

Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.”

Genesis 28 · Grade 3

The House of God

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaac called Jacob, blessed him, and told him not to marry a Canaanite woman. He sent Jacob to Paddan Aram to find a wife from his uncle Laban's daughters. Isaac prayed that God Almighty would give Jacob the blessing of Abraham.

Jacob left Beersheba and traveled toward Haran. At sunset he stopped and slept with a stone under his head. He dreamed of a stairway set on the earth with its top reaching heaven, and the angels of God were going up and down on it. The Lord stood above it and said, I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. He promised Jacob the land, many descendants, and blessing for all families of the earth through him.

Jacob woke and said, Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I didn't know it. He set up the stone as a pillar and poured oil on it. He named the place Bethel. Jacob promised that if God would be with him and bring him home in peace, the Lord would be his God, and he would give God a tenth of all he received.

Memory Verse

Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.”

Genesis 28 · Grade 4

God Meets Jacob

Name Date

Read and Think

Jacob was running away from Esau. He was alone, far from home, and sleeping on the ground with a stone for a pillow. He had deceived his father and brother. If anyone did not deserve a visit from God, it was Jacob.

But God came to him anyway in a dream. A stairway connected earth and heaven, and the Lord stood above it. God did not scold Jacob. Instead He gave him the same promises given to Abraham and Isaac, and added, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go. That is grace: God's kindness we do not deserve.

In the New Testament, Jesus said to Nathanael that he would see the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man (John 1:51). Christians have read this as a picture of Jesus, who connects people with God.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did Jacob not deserve a visit from God?

  2. What is grace?

  3. What special promise did God add for Jacob?

Genesis 28 · Grade 5

Surely the Lord Is in This Place

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 28 begins with Isaac blessing Jacob knowingly this time, praying that God Almighty would give him the blessing of Abraham. Jacob sets out toward Haran as a fugitive, alone, with nothing but a staff (Genesis 32:10). Esau, seeing his parents' displeasure, marries a daughter of Ishmael, still trying to win approval without understanding God's ways.

At an ordinary place, Jacob sleeps under the open sky. God gives him a dream of a stairway (or ladder) set on earth and reaching heaven, with angels ascending and descending. The Lord stands above it and speaks the covenant promises to Jacob for the first time: land, offspring like the dust of the earth, and blessing for all families of the earth. Then come personal promises: I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you.

Jacob awakens in awe: How awesome this place is! This is none other than God's house, and this is the gate of heaven. He sets up his stone as a pillar, anoints it with oil, and renames Luz Bethel. His vow is sincere but still immature, with if God will be with me conditions. God had already promised all of it unconditionally. In the New Testament, Jesus uses this picture of Himself (John 1:51).

Show What You Know

  1. What does Isaac pray for Jacob at the start of the chapter?

  2. What covenant promises did God give Jacob?

  3. What personal promises did God add?

  4. Why is Jacob's vow described as immature?

  5. How does John 1:51 connect Jacob's dream to Jesus?
