Jacob Tricks His Father

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaac was old and could not see well. He told Esau to hunt and cook food for him. Then he would bless him. Rebekah heard this. She wanted Jacob to get the blessing.

Rebekah cooked food. She put Esau's clothes on Jacob and goat skins on his arms, so he would feel hairy like Esau. Jacob went to his father and said, I am Esau. That was a lie. Isaac blessed Jacob.

When Esau came back, he found out what happened. He cried and was very angry with Jacob. Jacob had to run away to his uncle Laban. Lies bring sadness to families. God wants us to tell the truth.

Memory Verse

The Stolen Blessing

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaac was old and his eyes were dim. He asked Esau to hunt game and make him tasty food so that he could bless him before he died. Rebekah heard and told Jacob to bring two young goats so she could cook them the way Isaac liked.

Jacob worried, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. Rebekah dressed him in Esau's best clothes and covered his hands and neck with goatskins. Isaac said, The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau. Jacob lied, I am Esau, and Isaac blessed him with plenty and rule over his brothers.

Soon Esau arrived. Isaac trembled, and Esau cried out bitterly. Isaac said, Your brother came with deceit, and has taken away your blessing. Esau hated Jacob and planned to kill him after their father's death. Rebekah sent Jacob away to her brother Laban in Haran.

Memory Verse

“God give you of the dew of the sky, of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and new wine.”

Deception Divides a Family

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 27 is a sad family story. Every person in it does something wrong. Isaac planned to bless Esau privately, even though God had said the older would serve the younger. Rebekah planned a deception instead of trusting God. Jacob lied to his father again and again. Esau wanted the blessing after he had despised the birthright.

Jacob even used God's name in his lie, saying the Lord had helped him find the game quickly. Isaac blessed him with abundance and leadership. Esau's bitter cry is one of the saddest moments in Genesis. Hebrews 12:17 says he could not undo his earlier choice, even with tears.

The result was a broken family. Esau planned to kill his brother. Rebekah sent away the son she loved, and as far as Genesis tells us, she never saw him again. God's purpose still came true, but sin brought real pain. God does not need our lies to fulfill His promises.

Genesis 27 · Grade 5

God's Purpose and Human Sin

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 27 is a study in how God's sovereign purpose works through, and in spite of, human sin. God had declared before the twins' birth that the elder would serve the younger. Yet Isaac, favoring Esau, sets out to bless him in secret. Rebekah, rather than appealing to God or to her husband, plots a deception. Jacob raises a concern about getting caught, not about doing wrong.

The deception is carefully staged: Esau's clothes, goatskins, a savory meal. Jacob lies outright three times and even attributes his speed to Yahweh your God. Isaac, uneasy, finally gives the blessing: the dew of heaven, the fatness of the earth, lordship over his brothers, and the patriarchal promise, Cursed be everyone who curses you. Blessed be everyone who blesses you. When Esau returns, Isaac trembles violently, realizing God's will has prevailed: Yes, and he will be blessed.

The fallout is bitter. Esau's grief turns to murderous hatred, and Rebekah must send Jacob away for what she called a few days, which become about twenty years. The deceiver will soon be deceived by Laban. Scripture never approves of this family's sins, but it shows that God's promises do not depend on human goodness. Our sins have real consequences, and God's grace is greater than our failures.

  1. What does Genesis 27 show about God's purpose and human sin?

  3. Why did Isaac tremble and then say, he will be blessed?

  4. How did Rebekah's few days turn out?

  5. What two truths does the chapter hold together?
