Genesis 27 · Grade 4
Deception Divides a Family
Read and Think
Genesis 27 is a sad family story. Every person in it does something wrong. Isaac planned to bless Esau privately, even though God had said the older would serve the younger. Rebekah planned a deception instead of trusting God. Jacob lied to his father again and again. Esau wanted the blessing after he had despised the birthright.
Jacob even used God's name in his lie, saying the Lord had helped him find the game quickly. Isaac blessed him with abundance and leadership. Esau's bitter cry is one of the saddest moments in Genesis. Hebrews 12:17 says he could not undo his earlier choice, even with tears.
The result was a broken family. Esau planned to kill his brother. Rebekah sent away the son she loved, and as far as Genesis tells us, she never saw him again. God's purpose still came true, but sin brought real pain. God does not need our lies to fulfill His promises.
