Genesis 26 · Grade 5
The Lord Has Made Room
Read and Think
In Genesis 26, God personally confirms the Abrahamic covenant to Isaac: I will be with you, and will bless you. He added, In your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed. God grounds this promise in Abraham's obedience, and the chapter shows that the covenant is now Isaac's. Isaac obeys by staying in Gerar during the famine instead of going to Egypt.
The chapter is honest about Isaac's weakness. Fearing the men of Gerar, he repeats his father's deception about his wife. Abimelech discovers the truth and rebukes him. Still, God's blessing is undeserved and abundant: Isaac sows and reaps a hundredfold, and he becomes very wealthy. Prosperity provokes envy, and the Philistines stop up Abraham's wells and force Isaac to leave.
Isaac reopens his father's wells and gives them his father's names, honoring his heritage. When the herdsmen quarrel over Esek (contention) and Sitnah (enmity), he moves on until he finds Rehoboth (broad places). At Beersheba God reassures him, and Isaac builds an altar, calls on the Lord, and pitches his tent: worship comes before settling down. Abimelech then seeks a treaty, recognizing the Lord's blessing. The chapter ends sadly: Esau's marriages to Hittite women grieve Isaac and Rebekah.
