Twins!

Read the Story

Isaac and Rebekah wanted children, but they had none. Isaac prayed to the Lord for Rebekah. God answered his prayer. Rebekah had twin boys!

The first baby was red and hairy. They named him Esau. The second baby came out holding Esau's heel. They named him Jacob. Esau grew up to be a hunter. Jacob liked to stay near the tents.

One day Esau came in very hungry. Jacob was cooking stew. Esau asked for some stew. Jacob said, First, sell me your birthright. The birthright was a special gift for the oldest son. Esau traded it for a bowl of stew. He did not care about God's special gift.

Memory Verse

“Isaac entreated Yahweh for his wife, because she was barren. Yahweh was entreated by him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.”

The Birthright

Name Date

Read the Story

Abraham died at a good old age, 175 years old. His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him beside Sarah in the cave of Machpelah. After Abraham's death, God blessed Isaac.

Rebekah could not have children, so Isaac prayed for her, and the Lord answered. Twins struggled inside her, so she asked the Lord about it. The Lord said, Two nations are in your womb. He also said, The elder will serve the younger. Esau was born first, and Jacob came out holding Esau's heel.

Esau became a skillful hunter, and Jacob was a quiet man who lived in tents. One day Esau came in from the field exhausted and asked for Jacob's red stew. Jacob said, First, sell me your birthright. Esau said, I am about to die. What good is the birthright to me? He swore an oath and sold it. The Bible says Esau despised his birthright.

Memory Verse

Yahweh said to her, “Two nations are in your womb. Two peoples will be separated from your body. The one people will be stronger than the other people. The elder will serve the younger.”

Genesis 25 · Grade 4

Choosing What Matters

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 25 marks the end of Abraham's life. He died at a good old age, and Isaac and Ishmael buried him together. God's blessing passed to Isaac, just as He had promised.

Like Sarah before her, Rebekah could not have children. Isaac prayed for twenty years, and God answered with twins. God told Rebekah ahead of time that the older would serve the younger. God's choice did not depend on who was born first or who was strongest.

The birthright meant a double share of the inheritance and leadership of the family, and in this family it was connected to God's covenant promises. Esau traded it for one meal because he cared more about his stomach right now than God's promises for the future. Jacob was wrong to take advantage of his brother, but Esau was wrong to despise what God valued.

Genesis 25 · Grade 5

Despising the Birthright

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 25 opens by recording Abraham's other descendants through Keturah and closes the story of Abraham's life. He died at a good old age, an old man, and full of years, and was gathered to his people. Isaac and Ishmael buried him beside Sarah. The account of Ishmael's twelve sons shows that God kept His promise to make Ishmael a nation.

The story then turns to Isaac. Rebekah was barren, and Isaac prayed; the Lord granted his prayer. When the twins struggled within her, God revealed that two nations would come from them and that the elder will serve the younger. Paul cites this in Romans 9:10-13 to show that God's choice rests on His gracious purpose, not on human merit or birth order.

The famous birthright scene reveals the brothers' hearts. Esau, exhausted from hunting, demands Jacob's red stew. Jacob shrewdly bargains for the birthright. Esau's reply, What good is the birthright to me? exposes his priorities. Genesis concludes, So Esau despised his birthright. Hebrews 12:16 warns believers not to be like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. Neither brother looks admirable here: Jacob grasps, and Esau scorns. Yet God's purpose will stand.

Show What You Know

  1. How did God keep His promise about Ishmael in this chapter?

  2. What did God reveal about the twins before they were born?

  3. How does Paul use this in Romans 9?

  4. What warning does Hebrews 12:16 give?

  5. How do both brothers fall short in the birthright scene?
