Genesis 25 · Grade 4
Choosing What Matters
Read and Think
Genesis 25 marks the end of Abraham's life. He died at a good old age, and Isaac and Ishmael buried him together. God's blessing passed to Isaac, just as He had promised.
Like Sarah before her, Rebekah could not have children. Isaac prayed for twenty years, and God answered with twins. God told Rebekah ahead of time that the older would serve the younger. God's choice did not depend on who was born first or who was strongest.
The birthright meant a double share of the inheritance and leadership of the family, and in this family it was connected to God's covenant promises. Esau traded it for one meal because he cared more about his stomach right now than God's promises for the future. Jacob was wrong to take advantage of his brother, but Esau was wrong to despise what God valued.
