A Prayer at the Well

Read the Story

Abraham wanted a good wife for his son Isaac. He sent his servant on a long trip with ten camels. The servant came to a well in the evening.

The servant prayed for God's help. He asked that the right girl would offer water to him and to his camels. Before he even finished praying, Rebekah came with her water jar.

Rebekah gave the servant a drink. Then she offered to get water for his camels too. Thirsty camels drink a lot! The servant thanked God. Rebekah went home with him and married Isaac. Isaac loved her.

The Lord Led the Way

Name Date

Read the Story

Abraham was old. He made his oldest servant promise to find a wife for Isaac from among his relatives, not from the Canaanites. Abraham said, He will send his angel before you.

The servant traveled to the city of Nahor with ten camels. At the well he prayed, Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, please give me success today. He asked that the young woman who offered water to his camels would be the one. Before he finished speaking, Rebekah came, and she did just that.

The servant bowed and worshiped the Lord, saying, Blessed be Yahweh. He told Rebekah's family everything. Her brother Laban and her father agreed, saying, The thing proceeds from Yahweh. Rebekah was asked, Will you go? She said, I will go. Isaac married Rebekah, and he loved her.

Memory Verse

He said, “Blessed be Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his loving kindness and his truth toward my master. As for me, Yahweh has led me on the way to the house of my master’s relatives.”

Genesis 24 · Grade 5

The Faithful Servant

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 24 is the longest chapter in Genesis, and it tells a story of providence: God's careful, often quiet guidance of ordinary events. Abraham, now old, insists that Isaac must not marry a Canaanite and must not return to Mesopotamia, because the promised land is Isaac's inheritance. He trusts that the Lord will send His angel ahead of his servant.

At the well outside the city of Nahor, the servant prays, Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, please give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. His request is wise: the woman who willingly waters ten camels will show generosity and diligence. Before he finishes, Rebekah appears and does exactly what he asked. The servant watches in silence, then bows and blesses the Lord, who has not forsaken his loving kindness and his truth toward my master.

The servant retells the whole story, highlighting God's guidance. Laban and Bethuel admit, The thing proceeds from Yahweh. Rebekah freely chooses, I will go. The chapter ends tenderly: Isaac brings Rebekah into his mother's tent, marries her, loves her, and is comforted after his mother's death. The nameless servant is a picture of faithful service: he seeks his master's interests, prays, worships, and points all glory to God.

Show What You Know

  1. What is providence, as shown in this chapter?

  2. Why was the servant's request about watering camels wise?

  3. What two qualities of God did the servant praise?

  4. How did Rebekah show her own faith?

  5. Why is the servant a good model for believers?

Think About It

  1. Where have you seen God's quiet guidance in your life or family?

  2. The servant is never named, but he served faithfully. How can you serve God without needing credit?

Memory Verse

He said, “Blessed be Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his loving kindness and his truth toward my master. As for me, Yahweh has led me on the way to the house of my master’s relatives.”
