God Will Provide

Name Date

Read the Story

God gave Abraham a very hard test. God told Abraham to take Isaac to a mountain and offer him to God. Abraham was sad, but he trusted God. He believed God would take care of Isaac.

Abraham and Isaac walked up the mountain. Isaac asked, Where is the lamb for a burnt offering? Abraham said, God will provide himself the lamb.

At the top, God's angel called to Abraham and told him not to hurt the boy. God did not want Isaac. Abraham looked and saw a ram caught in a bush. God had given the ram instead. Abraham named the place Yahweh Will Provide.

The Lord Will Provide

Name Date

Read the Story

After these things, God tested Abraham. He told him to take his only son Isaac, whom he loved, to the land of Moriah and offer him there. Early the next morning Abraham obeyed. Hebrews 11 says Abraham believed God could even raise Isaac from the dead.

On the third day they saw the mountain. Isaac carried the wood, and Abraham carried the fire. Isaac asked, Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb? Abraham said, God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.

At the place God showed him, Abraham built an altar. But the angel of the Lord called from heaven, Abraham, Abraham! He told Abraham not to harm the boy, and said, Now I know that you fear God. Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket and offered it instead of his son. He called the place Yahweh Will Provide. God promised again to bless all nations through Abraham's offspring.

Genesis 22 · Grade 4

A Test of Trust

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 22 begins, God tested Abraham. God asked for the most precious thing in Abraham's life, the son of promise. This was not because God wanted Isaac to die; God would never desire that. It was a test to show whether Abraham trusted God more than anything, even God's gifts.

Abraham obeyed early in the morning. On the way, Isaac asked about the lamb, and Abraham answered with faith: God will provide. Hebrews 11:19 explains that Abraham reasoned God could raise Isaac from the dead, because God had promised that the covenant would continue through Isaac.

At the last moment, the angel of the Lord stopped Abraham. God provided a ram to be offered in Isaac's place. Abraham named the place Yahweh Will Provide. Christians have read this as a picture of Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).

Show What You Know

  1. What was God testing in Abraham?

  2. What answer did Abraham give Isaac about the lamb?

  3. Why did Abraham believe God could raise Isaac?

  4. How does this story point to Jesus?

Think About It

Genesis 22 · Grade 5

On the Mount of the Lord It Will Be Provided

Name Date

Read and Think

After these things, God tested Abraham. God's command is stated with painful precision: Now take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love. God was not tempting Abraham to sin; God's word elsewhere forbids child sacrifice. This was a test to reveal and refine Abraham's faith. Would he cling to the gift, or to the Giver who had promised that through Isaac his offspring would be named?

Abraham rose early and obeyed. On the third day he told his servants, The boy and I will go over there. We will worship, and come back to you. Isaac carried the wood up the mountain. When he asked where the lamb was, Abraham replied, God will provide himself the lamb. Hebrews 11:17-19 says Abraham considered that God was able to raise Isaac from the dead.

When Abraham was about to act, the angel of the Lord called from heaven and stopped him: Now I know that you fear God. Abraham saw a ram caught in a thicket and offered it as a substitute. He named the place Yahweh Will Provide. God swore by Himself to bless Abraham and to bless all nations through his offspring. Moriah is later linked with Jerusalem (2 Chronicles 3:1). There, God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all (Romans 8:32). Christians have read this as a picture: Isaac was spared, but Jesus was not.

Show What You Know

  1. Why is it clear that God was not asking Abraham to do evil?

  2. What did Abraham tell his servants, and what does it show?

  3. What does Hebrews 11:17-19 say Abraham believed?

  4. What did God swear in verses 16-18?

  5. How does Romans 8:32 connect to this chapter?
