Genesis 22 · Grade 4
A Test of Trust
Read and Think
Genesis 22 begins, God tested Abraham. God asked for the most precious thing in Abraham's life, the son of promise. This was not because God wanted Isaac to die; God would never desire that. It was a test to show whether Abraham trusted God more than anything, even God's gifts.
Abraham obeyed early in the morning. On the way, Isaac asked about the lamb, and Abraham answered with faith: God will provide. Hebrews 11:19 explains that Abraham reasoned God could raise Isaac from the dead, because God had promised that the covenant would continue through Isaac.
At the last moment, the angel of the Lord stopped Abraham. God provided a ram to be offered in Isaac's place. Abraham named the place Yahweh Will Provide. Christians have read this as a picture of Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).
