God had promised Abraham and Sarah a baby. They waited many, many years. At last, God did what He said. Sarah had a baby boy!

Abraham was 100 years old. They named the baby Isaac, which means he laughs. Sarah said, God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears will laugh with me. It was a happy laugh.

Later, Hagar and her son Ishmael went into the desert. When their water ran out, Ishmael cried. God heard him. God showed Hagar a well of water, and they drank. God took care of them too.

Laughter and Living Water

Name Date

Read the Story

The Lord visited Sarah as He had said. Sarah became pregnant and gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had spoken. Abraham named him Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day as God commanded. Sarah said, God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears will laugh with me.

When Isaac was weaned, Sarah saw Ishmael mocking. She asked Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away. Abraham was very upset, but God told him to listen to Sarah, because Isaac was the son of promise. God also promised to make Ishmael a nation.

Hagar and Ishmael wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. When the water ran out, Hagar sat a distance away, crying. God heard the boy's voice. The angel of God said, Don't be afraid. God opened her eyes, and she saw a well. God was with Ishmael as he grew up. Later Abraham made a covenant with King Abimelech at Beersheba and called on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.

Right on Time

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 21 begins with joy: Yahweh visited Sarah as he had said, and Yahweh did to Sarah as he had spoken. Twenty-five years after God first spoke to Abraham, the promised son was born. God's timing may seem slow to us, but it is never late. Sarah, who once laughed in doubt, now laughs with joy.

The family faced conflict. Sarah saw Ishmael mocking and asked Abraham to send Hagar and her son away. This grieved Abraham, because he loved Ishmael. God assured him that the promise would continue through Isaac, and that He would also make Ishmael a nation.

In the wilderness, Hagar's water ran out and she was heartbroken. But God heard the boy's voice, just as Ishmael's name promised, God hears. God provided a well and was with Ishmael as he grew. Even when families are hurting, God cares for each person.

Genesis 21 · Grade 5

The Son of Promise

Name Date

Read and Think

The opening verses of Genesis 21 emphasize that God's word came true exactly: the Lord visited Sarah as he had said and did as he had spoken, at the set time. Abraham was one hundred years old. Isaac's very name, he laughs, turned Sarah's earlier laughter of doubt into the laughter of joy. Abraham obeyed God by circumcising Isaac on the eighth day.

At the feast for Isaac's weaning, Ishmael mocked, and Sarah demanded that Hagar and Ishmael be sent away. Abraham was deeply distressed, but God told him that his offspring would be named through Isaac, and promised to make Ishmael a nation also. In Galatians 4, Paul uses Isaac and Ishmael as a picture: Isaac was born by God's promise, not by human effort.

In the wilderness, God showed tender care. He heard the boy's voice, called to Hagar, and opened her eyes to see a well. God was with Ishmael. The chapter ends with Abraham at peace with Abimelech, digging a well at Beersheba, planting a tamarisk tree, and calling on the Everlasting God. Abraham, still a sojourner, is putting down roots in the promised land by faith.

Show What You Know

  1. What phrases show that God fulfilled His word exactly?

  2. How did Isaac's name turn Sarah's doubt into joy?

  3. How does Paul use Isaac in Galatians 4?

  4. How did God care for Hagar and Ishmael?

  5. What did Abraham do at Beersheba?

Think About It
