Genesis 21 · Grade 5
The Son of Promise
Read and Think
The opening verses of Genesis 21 emphasize that God's word came true exactly: the Lord visited Sarah as he had said and did as he had spoken, at the set time. Abraham was one hundred years old. Isaac's very name, he laughs, turned Sarah's earlier laughter of doubt into the laughter of joy. Abraham obeyed God by circumcising Isaac on the eighth day.
At the feast for Isaac's weaning, Ishmael mocked, and Sarah demanded that Hagar and Ishmael be sent away. Abraham was deeply distressed, but God told him that his offspring would be named through Isaac, and promised to make Ishmael a nation also. In Galatians 4, Paul uses Isaac and Ishmael as a picture: Isaac was born by God's promise, not by human effort.
In the wilderness, God showed tender care. He heard the boy's voice, called to Hagar, and opened her eyes to see a well. God was with Ishmael. The chapter ends with Abraham at peace with Abimelech, digging a well at Beersheba, planting a tamarisk tree, and calling on the Everlasting God. Abraham, still a sojourner, is putting down roots in the promised land by faith.

God called Himself the Everlasting God. Why is it comforting that God never changes or ends?
Christians are children of promise like Isaac (Galatians 4:28). What does it mean to be part of God's family by His grace?
