God Speaks in a Dream

Name Date

Read the Story

Abraham and Sarah moved to a place called Gerar. Abraham was afraid, so he did not tell the whole truth. He said that Sarah was his sister. The king, Abimelech, took Sarah to his palace.

But God was watching over Sarah. That night God spoke to the king in a dream. God told him that Sarah was Abraham's wife and he must give her back.

The next morning the king gave Sarah back to Abraham. He also gave Abraham sheep, cows and silver. Abraham prayed for the king, and God helped the king's family.

Memory Verse

God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also withheld you from sinning against me. Therefore I didn’t allow you to touch her.

A King Who Listened

Name Date

Read the Story

Abraham traveled to Gerar. He was afraid. So he said again that Sarah was his sister. She was his half-sister, but she was also his wife. It was a half-truth to fool people. Abimelech, king of Gerar, took Sarah into his household.

God came to Abimelech in a dream. He warned him that Sarah was a married woman. Abimelech said he had not meant to do wrong. God said He knew this. He had kept Abimelech from sinning. God told him to give Sarah back. Abraham was a prophet who would pray for him.

Abimelech returned Sarah and asked Abraham why he had done this. Abraham said he thought there was no fear of God in that place. Abimelech gave Abraham sheep, cattle, servants and a thousand pieces of silver. He told Abraham he could live anywhere in his land. Abraham prayed, and God healed Abimelech's household.

Memory Verse

God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also withheld you from sinning against me. Therefore I didn’t allow you to touch her.

Genesis 20 · Grade 4

The Same Mistake Twice

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 20 sounds a lot like Genesis 12. Once again Abraham is afraid, and once again he says Sarah is his sister. Even people of great faith can fall into the same sin more than once. This time it came right before Isaac's promised birth, putting God's promise at risk.

But God protects His promise. He warns King Abimelech in a dream and keeps him from touching Sarah. God even says that He held Abimelech back from sinning. God is in control even when people make poor choices.

It is embarrassing that a foreign king acts more honorably than Abraham in this story. Abraham assumed there was no fear of God in Gerar, but Abimelech listened to God right away. Still, God calls Abraham a prophet and uses his prayer to bring healing. God's grace is bigger than Abraham's failure.

Show What You Know

  1. How is Genesis 20 like Genesis 12?

  2. Why was this a dangerous time for God's promise?

  3. How did God protect Sarah?

  4. What wrong assumption did Abraham make about Gerar?

Think About It

  1. Abraham repeated an old mistake. What can help us not to keep repeating the same sin?

  2. Abimelech listened to God quickly. How can you be quick to listen when God shows you something is wrong?

Genesis 20 · Grade 5

God Guards His Promise

Name Date

Read and Think

In Genesis 20, Abraham journeys to Gerar and repeats the fearful deception he used in Egypt, telling people Sarah is his sister. The timing is serious: God has just promised that Sarah will bear Isaac within a year. Abimelech takes Sarah, and the promise appears to be in danger.

God intervenes directly. In a dream He tells Abimelech, You are a dead man because Sarah is married. Abimelech pleads his innocence, and God agrees that he acted with integrity of heart, adding, I also withheld you from sinning against me. God's sovereignty is on display: He restrains sin and protects His plan.

Abimelech confronts Abraham, who admits he assumed there was no fear of God there. Ironically, the pagan king shows more fear of God than Abraham's fear allowed him to expect. Yet God still calls Abraham His prophet. Abraham prays for Abimelech, and God heals his household. The story shows that God's faithfulness to His covenant does not depend on Abraham's faithfulness. Grace, not merit, carries the promise.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was the timing of this event serious?

  2. What did God say He had done for Abimelech?

  3. What does this show about God's sovereignty?

  4. What is ironic about Abimelech's response?

  5. What carries God's promise forward in this story?
