Genesis 20 · Grade 4
The Same Mistake Twice
Read and Think
Genesis 20 sounds a lot like Genesis 12. Once again Abraham is afraid, and once again he says Sarah is his sister. Even people of great faith can fall into the same sin more than once. This time it came right before Isaac's promised birth, putting God's promise at risk.
But God protects His promise. He warns King Abimelech in a dream and keeps him from touching Sarah. God even says that He held Abimelech back from sinning. God is in control even when people make poor choices.
It is embarrassing that a foreign king acts more honorably than Abraham in this story. Abraham assumed there was no fear of God in Gerar, but Abimelech listened to God right away. Still, God calls Abraham a prophet and uses his prayer to bring healing. God's grace is bigger than Abraham's failure.
