After God made everything, He rested on the seventh day. He blessed that day and made it holy.

God made the first man from the dust of the ground. God breathed into him, and the man became alive. His name was Adam. God planted a beautiful garden called Eden and put Adam there to take care of it.

God said it was not good for Adam to be alone. So God made a woman from Adam's side and brought her to him. Adam was very happy. God made them to be husband and wife.

Genesis 2 · Grade 3

A Home in Eden

Name Date

Read the Story

Genesis 2 tells more about how God made the first people. God shaped the man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into him. Adam became a living being.

God planted a garden in Eden, full of trees that were good for food. A river watered the garden. In the middle were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God told Adam he could eat from any tree except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

God brought the animals to Adam, and Adam gave them names. But none of them was a fitting helper for him. So God caused Adam to sleep, took a part of his side, and made the woman. God brought her to Adam, and they became husband and wife.

Memory Verse

“Yahweh God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.”

Genesis 2 · Grade 4

Made by God, Made for Each Other

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 2 begins with rest. God finished His work and rested on the seventh day. God was not tired. He rested to show that His work was complete, and He blessed the day and made it holy.

Then the chapter zooms in on the creation of people. God formed the man from the dust and breathed into him the breath of life. We are made from simple dust, but we are alive because God gives us life. God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. God also gave one clear command: do not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. Adam named the animals, but none of them was like him. So God made the woman from Adam's side and brought her to him. Adam was overjoyed. God created marriage: a man and a woman joined together as one.

Genesis 2 · Grade 5

The Breath of Life and the Gift of Rest

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 1 gives the big picture of creation; Genesis 2 focuses on the creation of the first people and their home. It begins with God resting on the seventh day. God's rest shows His work was complete and good, and He set the day apart as holy. Later, God would give His people a weekly day of rest to remember Him.

God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. This shows two things: we are humble creatures made from the earth, and our life is a gift that comes directly from God. God placed Adam in Eden to work it and keep it. Work is not a punishment; it was part of God's good plan from the start.

God gave Adam freedom to eat from every tree except one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Obeying God would show trust. Then God said it was not good for the man to be alone. After Adam named the animals and found no partner like himself, God made the woman from his side. Adam rejoiced, and God joined them as husband and wife, the first marriage.

  2. What two truths do we learn from God forming man from dust and breathing life into him?

  3. Was work part of God's good plan before sin? Explain.
