Nothing Is Too Hard for God

Name Date

Read the Story

One hot day, Abraham was sitting at the door of his tent. He looked up and saw three men. Abraham ran to meet them. He gave them water to wash their feet and a good meal to eat.

The visitors were sent by God. One of them was the Lord Himself. He said that next year Sarah would have a son. Sarah was inside the tent listening. She laughed, because she was very old.

The Lord said, Why did Sarah laugh? Then he asked, Is anything too hard for Yahweh? Nothing is too hard for God! Later, Abraham prayed and asked God to be merciful to the people in the city of Sodom.

Memory Verse

Abraham Prays for Sodom

Read the Story

The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre. Abraham saw three men and hurried to welcome them. He brought water for their feet, had Sarah bake bread, and prepared a calf. He stood by them under the tree while they ate.

The Lord said, Sarah your wife will have a son. Sarah laughed to herself because she and Abraham were old. The Lord asked, Is anything too hard for Yahweh? Sarah was afraid and said, I didn't laugh, but the Lord said, No, but you did laugh.

The Lord told Abraham that the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was very great. Abraham asked, Will you consume the righteous with the wicked? He asked what God would do if there were fifty righteous people. He kept asking: forty-five, forty, thirty, twenty, ten. Each time God said He would not destroy the city for their sake.

Genesis 18 · Grade 4

A Friend Who Prays

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 18 shows Abraham's warm hospitality. In the heat of the day he sees three visitors and runs to greet them, bowing low. He offers water, rest and food, and serves them himself. One of the visitors is the Lord. In the New Testament, Hebrews 13:2 reminds Christians to show hospitality, because some have entertained angels without knowing it.

The Lord repeats His promise: Sarah will have a son by this time next year. Sarah, listening at the tent door, laughs to herself. The Lord asks the key question of the chapter: Is anything too hard for Yahweh? God's power is greater than every impossibility.

Then the Lord shares His plans with Abraham, treating him as a friend. Sodom's sin is great. Abraham steps forward to pray, appealing to God's justice: Shouldn't the Judge of all the earth do right? He boldly but humbly asks God to spare the city if fifty, then fewer, and finally ten righteous people are found. God agrees each time. Abraham's prayer shows that God is just and merciful, and that He welcomes our prayers for others.

Genesis 18 · Grade 5

The Judge of All the Earth

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 18 opens with a scene of humble hospitality. The Lord appears to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre in the form of three men. Abraham, nearly one hundred years old, runs to meet them, bows, and offers a generous meal of fresh bread, a tender calf, curds and milk. Abraham does not yet realize the full identity of his guests, but he treats them with honor.

The Lord announces that Sarah will bear a son within a year. Sarah laughs inwardly, thinking of her age. The Lord's response is both gentle and searching: Why did Sarah laugh? Is anything too hard for Yahweh? Sarah denies it out of fear, but the Lord lovingly corrects her. God knows our hidden doubts and still keeps His promises.

As the men look toward Sodom, the Lord reveals His plan to Abraham, because Abraham is chosen to teach his children to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice. Abraham intercedes, asking, Shouldn't the Judge of all the earth do right? From fifty down to ten, he pleads for the city. Abraham is not trying to change God's character; he is appealing to it. God is perfectly just and abundantly merciful. Abraham is a model of intercession. In the New Testament, Hebrews 7:25 says Jesus lives to pray for His people.

Show What You Know

  1. How do we know Abraham showed great honor to his guests?

  2. What does the Lord's response to Sarah's laughter teach?

  3. Why did the Lord reveal His plan to Abraham?

  4. What was Abraham appealing to in his prayer?

  5. Who is the greater Intercessor that Abraham points to?
