Genesis 17 · Grade 4
God Almighty Keeps His Word
Read and Think
Thirteen years after Ishmael's birth, God appeared to Abram with a new name for Himself: El Shaddai, God Almighty. Abram and Sarai were very old, but nothing is too hard for the Almighty. God called Abram to walk before Him faithfully.
God gave new names to show new identities. Abram (exalted father) became Abraham (father of a multitude). Every time someone said his name, they would hear God's promise. Sarai became Sarah, and God promised she would be the mother of nations.
God gave a physical sign of the covenant for the males of Abraham's household, marking them as God's people. God promised a son named Isaac within a year. When Abraham asked God to bless Ishmael, God promised to bless him too, but the covenant line would go through Isaac. Abraham obeyed that very day.
