Genesis 14 · Grade 5

Blessed by God Most High

Read and Think

Genesis 14 shows Abram as a man of courage and integrity. A coalition of four eastern kings crushed a rebellion by five kings of the plain, including Sodom and Gomorrah. They took plunder and captives, including Lot, who now lived in Sodom itself.

When Abram heard, he armed 318 trained men born in his household and pursued the invaders as far as Dan. With a night attack he defeated them and recovered everything. God gave a small household victory over powerful armies.

On his return, two kings met him. Melchizedek, king of Salem (later Jerusalem) and priest of God Most High, brought bread and wine and blessed Abram, declaring that God Most High is possessor of heaven and earth. Abram gave him a tenth of all. In the New Testament, Hebrews 7 presents Melchizedek as a picture of Christ, a priest forever. By contrast, the king of Sodom offered Abram the goods. Abram had sworn to the Lord, God Most High, that he would not take even a thread or a sandal strap, so that no one could say anyone but God had made him rich.
