Genesis 14 · Grade 4

The Priest-King Blesses Abram

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 14 is the first war recorded in the Bible. Four powerful kings defeated five kings near the Dead Sea, including the king of Sodom. They carried off people and goods, and Lot was among the captives. Lot's choice to live near Sodom had led him into trouble.

Abram did not decide that Lot's trouble was only Lot's problem. He acted with courage and love. With 318 trained men from his household, he pursued the enemy, divided his forces, attacked by night and rescued Lot and everyone else.

Then a mysterious figure appeared: Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He blessed Abram and praised God for the victory. Abram gave him a tenth of everything. In the New Testament, Hebrews 7 compares Melchizedek to Jesus, who is both King and Priest. Abram refused the king of Sodom's reward, trusting God alone to provide.
