Abram Is Kind to Lot

Name Date

Read the Story

Abram and his nephew Lot had lots of sheep, cows and tents. They had so many animals that there was not enough room for all of them in one place.

The men who cared for the animals began to argue. Abram told Lot that they should not fight because they were family. He let Lot choose where to go, and he would go the other way.

Lot chose the green valley near the Jordan River. Abram stayed in Canaan. Then God told Abram to look all around. God promised to give all that land to Abram and his family forever.

Abram said to Lot, “Please, let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen; for we are relatives.

Abram Chooses Peace

Name Date

Read the Story

Abram came back from Egypt very rich in animals, silver and gold. Lot also had flocks, herds and tents. The land could not support them both, and their herdsmen began to quarrel.

Abram said to Lot, Please, let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen; for we are relatives. Isn't the whole land before you? He let Lot choose left or right, and he would go the other way. Abram was the older man and could have chosen first, but he let Lot choose.

Lot looked and saw that the Jordan valley was well watered, like the garden of the Lord. He chose it and moved his tents near Sodom, where the people were very wicked. After Lot left, God told Abram to look north, south, east and west. God promised to give him all that land and to make his offspring as many as the dust of the earth.

Memory Verse

Arise, walk through the land in its length and in its width; for I will give it to you.”

Genesis 13 · Grade 4

Generous Faith

Name Date

Read and Think

Back in Canaan, Abram returned to the altar he had built near Bethel and called on the name of the Lord. God had made him wealthy, and Lot was wealthy too. Soon their herdsmen quarreled because there was not enough pasture and water.

Abram could have demanded the best land. He was older, and God had promised him the land. Instead he chose peace and generosity and let Lot choose first. Abram trusted that God would provide for him, so he did not need to grab.

Lot chose with his eyes. He saw the lush Jordan valley and chose it, moving toward Sodom, a very sinful city. Right after this, God spoke to Abram and renewed His promise: I will give all the land which you see to you and to your offspring forever. Abram moved his tent to Hebron and built another altar.

Genesis 13 · Grade 5

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 13 shows Abram growing in faith after his failure in Egypt. He returns to the place of his altar near Bethel and calls on the Lord. Abram and Lot have become so wealthy that the land cannot support them both, and strife breaks out between their herdsmen, while the Canaanites and Perizzites look on.

Abram takes the lead in making peace. As the older relative and the one who received God's promise, he had every right to choose first. Instead he says, Please, let there be no strife between you and me, and offers Lot the choice. Abram's generosity flows from trust: God, not Abram's cleverness, will provide.

Lot lifts up his eyes and sees the Jordan plain, well watered like the garden of the Lord and like Egypt. He chooses it and pitches his tent toward Sodom, whose people are described as wicked and great sinners against the Lord. Then the Lord tells Abram to lift up his eyes, look in every direction, and walk through the land, for He will give it all to him and make his offspring like the dust of the earth. Lot chose by sight; Abram received by faith.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does the mention of the Canaanites and Perizzites matter?

  2. What right did Abram give up, and why?

  3. To what two places was the Jordan plain compared?

  4. What do we learn about Sodom in this chapter?

  5. Compare how Lot and Abram each lifted up their eyes.
