Genesis 11 · Grade 2

The Tower of Babel

Name Date

Read the Story

Long ago, all the people in the world spoke the same language. They wanted to build a city and a very tall tower that reached the sky, so they would be famous. They were proud.

God had told people to spread out and fill the earth. But these people wanted to stay together and be great without God.

God came down and saw the city and the tower. He mixed up their words so they spoke different languages. They could not understand each other! They stopped building and moved to many places. The city was called Babel.

Memory Verse

They said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let’s make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth.”

Genesis 11 · Grade 3

Making a Name

Name Date

Read the Story

After the flood, the whole earth had one language. People moved east and settled on a plain in the land of Shinar. They said, Come, let's make bricks, and burn them thoroughly. They used bricks for stone and tar for mortar.

They said, Come, let's build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let's make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth. But God had told people to fill the earth. Their plan came from pride and disobedience.

The Lord came down to see the city. He confused their language so they could not understand one another, and He scattered them over the face of the earth. The place was called Babel. The rest of the chapter lists Shem's family down to Terah, the father of Abram.

Memory Verse

“Therefore its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of all the earth. From there, Yahweh scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.”

Genesis 11:9 (WEB)

Genesis 11 · Grade 4

Pride at Babel

Name Date

Read and Think

After the flood, God told Noah's family to fill the earth. But in Genesis 11 the people did the opposite. They settled in one place and decided to build a city with a tower reaching to the heavens. They said, Let's make a name for ourselves. They wanted glory for themselves instead of giving glory to God.

There is humor in the story. The people thought their tower was so great, but the Lord had to come down to see it. Compared to God, their mighty tower was tiny. God confused their language so they could no longer understand each other, and He scattered them across the earth. The place was named Babel.

The chapter ends by tracing Shem's family to Terah and his son Abram. While the proud builders tried to make a name for themselves, God was about to choose Abram and promise to make his name great. True greatness is a gift from God, not something we grab by our own power.

Show What You Know

  1. What had God commanded, and what did the people do instead?

  2. What did the people want to make for themselves?

  3. Why is it funny that the Lord came down to see the tower?

  4. How does Abram's story contrast with Babel?

Genesis 11 · Grade 5

From Babel to Abram

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 11 explains the many languages of the world. The people, still speaking one language, gathered in the plain of Shinar. Using baked bricks and tar, they set out to build a city and a tower with its top in the heavens. Their goal was twofold: to make a name for themselves and to avoid being scattered, which directly resisted God's command to fill the earth.

The Lord came down to see the city and the tower. He judged their united rebellion by confusing their language. The word Babel sounds like the Hebrew word for confuse. Unable to understand one another, the people stopped building and spread out over the earth. God's purpose for humanity moved forward in spite of their pride.

The second half of the chapter traces Shem's line down to Terah, whose family included Abram, Nahor and Haran. Abram married Sarai, and we are told plainly that Sarai was barren. Terah set out for Canaan but settled in Haran. The scene is set: a scattered world and a childless couple. Through them God would bring His blessing to all the nations. In the New Testament, at Pentecost (Acts 2), God's Spirit enabled the apostles to speak in many languages. Christians have read this as a reversal of Babel.

Show What You Know

  1. What two goals did the builders have?

  2. How was their plan rebellion against God?

  3. What does the name Babel sound like in Hebrew?

  4. What important fact is given about Sarai?

  5. How does Pentecost in Acts 2 reverse Babel?
