Genesis 11 · Grade 5
From Babel to Abram
Read and Think
Genesis 11 explains the many languages of the world. The people, still speaking one language, gathered in the plain of Shinar. Using baked bricks and tar, they set out to build a city and a tower with its top in the heavens. Their goal was twofold: to make a name for themselves and to avoid being scattered, which directly resisted God's command to fill the earth.
The Lord came down to see the city and the tower. He judged their united rebellion by confusing their language. The word Babel sounds like the Hebrew word for confuse. Unable to understand one another, the people stopped building and spread out over the earth. God's purpose for humanity moved forward in spite of their pride.
The second half of the chapter traces Shem's line down to Terah, whose family included Abram, Nahor and Haran. Abram married Sarai, and we are told plainly that Sarai was barren. Terah set out for Canaan but settled in Haran. The scene is set: a scattered world and a childless couple. Through them God would bring His blessing to all the nations. In the New Testament, at Pentecost (Acts 2), God's Spirit enabled the apostles to speak in many languages. Christians have read this as a reversal of Babel.

Think About It
Why do you think God chose a couple with no children to begin His plan of blessing the world?
Different languages divide people, but the gospel unites them. How can you welcome people who are different from you?
Memory Verse
“Therefore its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of all the earth. From there, Yahweh scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.”

- How can a group project honor God rather than pride?
- How can you listen when God's plan is different from yours?
