Genesis 11 · Grade 3
Making a Name
Read the Story
After the flood, the whole earth had one language. People moved east and settled on a plain in the land of Shinar. They said, Come, let's make bricks, and burn them thoroughly. They used bricks for stone and tar for mortar.
They said, Come, let's build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let's make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth. But God had told people to fill the earth. Their plan came from pride and disobedience.
The Lord came down to see the city. He confused their language so they could not understand one another, and He scattered them over the face of the earth. The place was called Babel. The rest of the chapter lists Shem's family down to Terah, the father of Abram.
Memory Verse
“Therefore its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of all the earth. From there, Yahweh scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.”
