Genesis 10 · Grade 3

The Table of Nations

Name Date

Read the Story

Genesis 10 is sometimes called the Table of Nations. It lists the descendants of Noah's three sons: Japheth, Ham and Shem. Each son's family grew into many peoples, who spread out by their clans, languages, lands and nations.

Some names in this list became famous places. Ham's son Canaan became the father of the Canaanites. Mizraim is the Hebrew name for Egypt. A man named Nimrod was a mighty hunter before the Lord. He built cities like Babel and Nineveh.

The list of Shem's family is important. Shem's descendants include Eber, whose name is related to the word Hebrew. Later, from Shem's line, God would call Abraham. All the nations came from one family, and God had a plan for all of them.

Memory Verse

“These are the families of the sons of Noah, by their generations, according to their nations. The nations divided from these on the earth after the flood.”

Genesis 10 · Grade 4

Every Nation from One Family

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 10 can look like a long list of strange names, but it carries a big message. After the flood, Noah's three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, became the ancestors of the nations. The chapter describes how their families spread out, each with its own land and language.

The chapter mentions places that appear again in the Bible: Egypt, Canaan, Assyria and Babylon. It also tells of Nimrod, a mighty hunter who founded great cities, including Babel. Human power was growing, but not always in ways that honored God.

Most importantly, Genesis 10 reminds us that every person on earth is related. All nations share the same human family and the same Creator. Later, God would promise Abraham that all the families of the earth would be blessed through him. In Revelation 7, people from every nation, tribe and language worship before God's throne.

Show What You Know

  1. Who were the ancestors of the nations listed in Genesis 10?

  2. Name two places in the chapter that appear again in the Bible.

  3. Who was Nimrod?

  4. What big truth does this chapter teach about people?

Think About It

  1. How should knowing all people are one family change the way we treat people from other countries or cultures?

  2. God wants people from every nation to worship Him. How can you pray for people in other countries?

Memory Verse

“These are the families of the sons of Noah, by their generations, according to their nations. The nations divided from these on the earth after the flood.”

Genesis 10 · Grade 5

God's Plan for the Nations

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 10 is a genealogy of nations. It traces how the families of Japheth, Ham and Shem spread across the world after the flood, by their families, languages, lands, and nations. Japheth's descendants spread along the coastlands. Ham's included Egypt, Cush and Canaan. Shem's included Eber, an ancestor of Abraham.

The chapter highlights Nimrod, a mighty hunter before Yahweh, whose kingdom began in Babel and who built Nineveh. His story foreshadows Genesis 11, where people at Babel try to make a name for themselves. Great cities and human strength can be used for good or for pride.

Genesis 10 actually comes before the explanation in Genesis 11 of how the languages were divided. The Bible sometimes gives the summary first and then the details. The big lesson is that every nation is part of God's world and God's story. The rest of Genesis narrows to one family, Abraham's, but the purpose is for blessing to reach all the nations listed here.

Show What You Know

  1. What four groupings does the chapter repeat?

  2. Name one nation descended from each son.

  3. How does Nimrod's story point ahead to Genesis 11?

  4. Why does Genesis 10 come before the Tower of Babel story?

  5. Why does God focus on Abraham's family later?
