Galatians 2 · Grade 4

Justified by Faith

Name Date

Read and Think

Fourteen years later, Paul went to Jerusalem with Barnabas and Titus. He met privately with the leaders to explain the Good News he preached to the Gentiles. Titus, a Greek believer, was not forced to follow the Jewish law. Some false believers had slipped in to take away the freedom believers have in Christ, but Paul did not give in.

The leaders added nothing to Paul's message. James, Peter, and John saw that God had given Paul a mission to the Gentiles, just as Peter had a mission to the Jews. They gave Paul and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship. They asked only that the poor be remembered, which Paul was eager to do.

In Antioch, Peter ate with Gentile believers until some men came from James. Then, afraid, he drew back, and even Barnabas followed. Paul confronted Peter in front of everyone. A person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. Paul describes the new life this brings. He has been crucified with Christ, and now Christ lives in him. He lives by faith in the Son of God, who loved him and gave Himself for him.

Galatians 2 · Grade 5

Crucified with Christ

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul continues his defense, recounting a visit to Jerusalem fourteen years after the first. He went by revelation, with Barnabas, a Jewish believer, and Titus, an uncircumcised Greek. Titus became a test case, and the leaders did not compel him to be circumcised. False brothers had infiltrated to spy on the liberty believers have in Christ, but Paul refused to yield even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would remain.

The pillars of the church, James, Cephas, and John, added nothing to Paul's message. They recognized that God had entrusted the gospel to Paul for the Gentiles, as to Peter for the circumcised. They extended the right hand of fellowship, dividing the mission field, and asked only that the poor be remembered, which Paul was eager to do.

The Antioch incident shows how serious the issue was. Peter had freely shared meals with Gentile believers, but when men came from James, he withdrew out of fear of the circumcision group. Other Jewish believers, even Barnabas, joined this hypocrisy. Paul opposed Peter publicly because his conduct contradicted the gospel. A person is justified not by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. Paul describes union with Christ. Through the law he died to the law so that he might live to God. He has been crucified with Christ; it is no longer he who lives, but Christ who lives in him. If righteousness came through the law, Christ died for nothing.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was Titus a test case?

  2. How did the pillars respond to Paul's message?

  3. Why did Paul oppose Peter publicly?

  4. What would it mean if righteousness came through the law?
