Called by Grace

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul wrote to the churches of Galatia. He said Jesus Christ and God the Father had sent him. Jesus gave Himself for people's sins to rescue them.

Paul was surprised. The Galatians were quickly turning to a different message. But there is only one Good News. Paul said no one could change it, not even an angel. Paul did not try to please people. He wanted to serve Christ.

Paul once fought against the church. But God called him by His grace and showed him Jesus. Later the churches in Judea heard that Paul was now preaching the faith. So they glorified God.

Galatians 1 · Grade 4

The One Gospel

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul opens his letter by stating that he is an apostle sent not by people but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Jesus from the dead. He greets the churches of Galatia with grace and peace from God, who gave His Son to rescue believers from this present evil age.

There is no thanksgiving in this letter. Instead, Paul is astonished that the Galatians are so quickly deserting God, who called them by grace, for a different message. That message is not good news at all. Some people were confusing them and twisting the Good News of Christ. Paul warns that even if an angel preached a different gospel, it must be rejected. Paul is not trying to win the approval of people, but of God.

Paul explains that he did not receive the Good News from any person. It came by a revelation of Jesus Christ. Once he was zealous for the traditions of his ancestors and fought against the church. But God, who set him apart and called him by grace, revealed His Son to him. Paul went to Arabia, then Damascus, and only after three years visited Peter in Jerusalem. The churches of Judea praised God because of him.

Galatians 1 · Grade 5

Not from Man

Name Date

Read and Think

Galatians is Paul's letter to the assemblies of Galatia (1:2). Paul opens by defending his apostleship, which came not from men nor through a man but through Jesus Christ and God the Father. His greeting already summarizes the Good News: Christ gave Himself for sins to rescue believers from the present evil age, according to the Father's will.

Unusually, Paul offers no thanksgiving. He is astonished that the Galatians are deserting God for a different gospel. Teachers were insisting that Gentile believers must keep the Jewish law, especially circumcision, to be fully accepted. Paul says such a message is not another gospel but a distortion. He declares that anyone who preaches a different gospel, even an angel, stands under God's judgment. He is not seeking human approval, for if he were, he would not be a servant of Christ.

Paul then gives his testimony to show that his gospel came by revelation, not human tradition. As a zealous Pharisee he violently opposed the church. But God, who set him apart from birth, called him by grace and revealed His Son in him so he might preach among the Gentiles. Paul did not immediately consult anyone. He went to Arabia and Damascus, and only after three years spent fifteen days with Peter, seeing also James, the Lord's brother. The Judean churches knew him only by report, and they glorified God because of him.

  1. The false teachers added requirements to faith in Christ. What are some ways people today are tempted to add to the gospel of grace?

  2. Paul's life shows that grace can reach even an enemy. How should this shape the way believers view and pray for those who oppose the faith?
