Galatians 1 · Grade 4

The One Gospel

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul opens his letter by stating that he is an apostle sent not by people but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Jesus from the dead. He greets the churches of Galatia with grace and peace from God, who gave His Son to rescue believers from this present evil age.

There is no thanksgiving in this letter. Instead, Paul is astonished that the Galatians are so quickly deserting God, who called them by grace, for a different message. That message is not good news at all. Some people were confusing them and twisting the Good News of Christ. Paul warns that even if an angel preached a different gospel, it must be rejected. Paul is not trying to win the approval of people, but of God.

Paul explains that he did not receive the Good News from any person. It came by a revelation of Jesus Christ. Once he was zealous for the traditions of his ancestors and fought against the church. But God, who set him apart and called him by grace, revealed His Son to him. Paul went to Arabia, then Damascus, and only after three years visited Peter in Jerusalem. The churches of Judea praised God because of him.

Think About It

  1. Paul says he serves Christ rather than seeking people's approval. When is it hard for you to choose God's approval over what others think?

  2. God changed Paul from an enemy of the church into its great preacher. What does Paul's story teach about whether anyone is beyond God's grace?

Memory Verse

“For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? For if I were still pleasing men, I wouldn’t be a servant of Christ.”
