Ezekiel Sees Inside the Temple

Name Date

Read the Story

The elders of Judah were sitting before Ezekiel in his house. Then Yahweh's hand fell on him. Ezekiel says the Spirit lifted him up and brought him in the visions of God to Jerusalem. The glory of the God of Israel was there.

God told Ezekiel to dig in a wall. He dug and found a door. Inside, pictures of idols were drawn on the wall. Seventy elders were burning incense to them in the dark.

Then Ezekiel saw about twenty-five men with their backs toward Yahweh's temple. They were worshiping the sun toward the east. The elders said Yahweh did not see them. But God saw it all.

Ezekiel 8 · Grade 4

Abominations in the Dark

Name Date

Read and Think

In the sixth year the elders of Judah sat before Ezekiel in his house. Yahweh's hand fell on him. Ezekiel says a form like a hand took him by a lock of his hair, and the Spirit brought him in the visions of God to Jerusalem. There he saw the glory of the God of Israel, as he had seen it in the plain.

God showed him four scenes, each worse than the one before. First was an image of jealousy at the north gate. Next, after digging through a wall, Ezekiel saw seventy elders with censers before idols painted on the walls. They were doing this in the dark, saying Yahweh did not see them.

Then he saw women weeping for Tammuz, a false god. Last, at the door of the temple, about twenty-five men turned their backs toward Yahweh's temple and worshiped the sun. God asked whether this was a light thing. The people's sin was driving God far from his sanctuary.

  1. How did Ezekiel get to Jerusalem in the vision?

  2. What did the elders say while they worshiped idols in the dark?

Ezekiel 8 · Grade 5

Backs Toward the Temple

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 8 is dated to the sixth year of the exile. As the elders of Judah sat before Ezekiel, Yahweh's hand fell on him. Ezekiel says a figure of fire and brightness took him by a lock of his head, and the Spirit brought him in the visions of God to Jerusalem. The glory of the God of Israel was there, just as Ezekiel had seen it in the plain. The same holy God was about to show him what was happening in his own house.

The tour moves deeper into the temple, and each scene is called a greater abomination. At the north gate stood the image of jealousy, an idol that provoked God's jealousy for his people's love. Through a hole in the wall Ezekiel found seventy elders, led by Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, offering incense to creeping things and idols drawn on the walls. Their excuse revealed their hearts, for they said that Yahweh did not see them and had forsaken the land.

Next came women weeping for Tammuz, a god of the nations. Finally, in the inner court between the porch and the altar, about twenty-five men turned their backs toward Yahweh's temple and worshiped the sun. The leaders who should have guided the people were leading them away from God. God asked, Is it a light thing to the house of Judah? Their idolatry was pushing him far from his sanctuary, which prepares for the next chapters, where Ezekiel sees the glory depart. In the New Testament, Hebrews 4:13 says: There is no creature that is hidden from his sight.

Show What You Know

  1. Why is it important that Ezekiel saw God's glory before seeing the idols?

  2. What did the elders' excuse reveal about their hearts?

  3. Where did the twenty-five men stand, and what were they doing?

  4. What New Testament verse says nothing is hidden from God's sight?

Think About It
