Ezekiel 7 · Grade 5

Silver and Gold Cannot Deliver

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 7 is a poem of urgent warning. Its first word for the land of Israel is An end! The end has come on the four corners of the land. God had warned for generations; now the time of patience was ending. Over and over God says he will judge them according to their ways, and then they will know that he is Yahweh.

The poem shows everyday life collapsing. Buyers would not rejoice and sellers would not mourn, because property would no longer matter. The trumpet would sound, but no one would go to the battle. People would become weak, all knees weak as water. They would throw their silver into the streets, because their silver and gold would not be able to deliver them in the day of Yahweh's wrath. The wealth that had become the stumbling block of their iniquity was now useless.

The chapter ends with a search that comes too late. They would seek peace, and there would be none. They would seek a vision of the prophet, but the law would perish from the priest and counsel from the elders. Even the king and the prince would mourn. The lesson is sobering: there is a time to turn, and it is now. In the New Testament, 2 Corinthians 6:2 says, Behold, now is the acceptable time. Behold, now is the day of salvation.

“They will cast their silver in the streets, and their gold will be as an unclean thing. Their silver and their gold won’t be able to deliver them in the day of Yahweh’s wrath. They won’t satisfy their souls or fill their bellies; because it has been the stumbling block of their iniquity.”
