A Remnant Will Remember

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Ezekiel to set his face toward the mountains of Israel and speak to them. On the hills and under green trees, the people had built altars for idols.

God said the idols and altars would be broken. Their high places would be made empty. This would happen because the people had turned their hearts away from God.

But God would leave a remnant. Some people would escape to other nations. There they would remember God. They would be sorry for the wrong they had done. They would know that He is Yahweh.

Memory Verse

You Will Know That I Am Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

God told Ezekiel to set his face toward the mountains of Israel. The mountains stand for the whole land, where the people had built high places for idols. God said he would destroy their high places, and their altars would become desolate.

The chapter is a warning about idols. Idols could not save the people. In the end the altars, the incense altars, and the idols would all be broken and cut down. Then the people would know that he is Yahweh.

Yet God would leave a remnant among the nations. Those who escaped would remember how their hearts had departed from God. They would be sorry for the evils they had committed. God had not spoken in vain.

Ezekiel 6 · Grade 5

Idols Broken, a Remnant Remembers

Name Date

Read and Think

In Ezekiel 6 God tells the prophet to set his face toward the mountains of Israel and prophesy. The hills, watercourses, and valleys were where the people had built high places for idols, often on every high hill and under every green tree. God speaks to the land itself, because the land had been filled with false worship.

The message is judgment on idolatry. The high places would be destroyed, the altars desolate, the idols broken, and the incense altars cut down. Ezekiel was even told to strike with his hand and stamp with his foot and cry out alas because of the evil abominations of the house of Israel. The idols the people trusted would be shown to be powerless.

Yet a remnant would remain among the nations. Those who escaped would remember God and realize how he had been grieved by their wandering hearts. They would loathe themselves for the evil they had done. That is the beginning of real repentance. The repeated refrain that they will know that he is Yahweh shows the goal: not only punishment, but people truly knowing God. In the New Testament, 1 John 5:21 gives a short warning: Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
