Ezekiel 47 · Grade 5
Leaves for Healing
Read and Think
Ezekiel 47 opens with one of the Bible's most beautiful pictures. Ezekiel says water trickled from under the temple threshold, flowing east. Every thousand cubits it grew deeper, from ankles to knees to waist, until it became a river that could not be crossed. Unlike natural rivers, it grew without tributaries; its source was God's presence.
The river flowed down into the Dead Sea, a lake so salty almost nothing lives in it. There the waters would be healed, and everything will live wherever the river comes. Fishermen would spread nets from En Gedi to En Eglaim. Only the marshes would stay salty, providing salt. The picture is of God's presence bringing life to the most lifeless places.
Trees on both banks would bear fruit every month, and their leaves would be for healing. The chapter closes by dividing the land among the twelve tribes and granting foreigners an inheritance as if native-born, a striking welcome to outsiders. In the New Testament, Revelation 22:1-2 describes a river of the water of life flowing from God's throne, with the tree of life whose leaves are for the healing of the nations.

Memory Verse
“By the river banks, on both sides, will grow every tree for food, whose leaf won’t wither, neither will its fruit fail. It will produce new fruit every month, because its waters issue out of the sanctuary. Its fruit will be for food, and its leaf for healing.””
