Ezekiel 46 · Grade 4

At the Door of the Gate

Name Date

Read and Think

In the vision, the gate of the inner court facing east would be shut during the six working days. On the Sabbath and on the new moon it would be opened. The prince would enter through the porch and stand by the gatepost while the priests offered his sacrifices, and he would worship at the threshold.

The people of the land would worship at the door of that gate before Yahweh on the Sabbaths and new moons. At the appointed feasts, whoever came in by the north gate would go out by the south gate. No one would return by the gate he entered. The prince would go in and out with the people.

A lamb would be offered every morning as a continual burnt offering. The prince could give land to his sons as an inheritance, but he could not take the people's land. Last, the man showed Ezekiel the kitchens where the offerings were boiled.

Ezekiel 46 · Grade 5

Ordered Worship

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 46 continues the laws of worship in the new temple. The inner east gate would open only on Sabbaths and new moons. The prince would stand at the gatepost and worship at the threshold while the priests offered his burnt offering and peace offerings. The prince was honored, but he was not a priest; he worshiped as one of God's people.

The people of the land would worship at the door of that gate before Yahweh on the Sabbaths and on the new moons. At the great feasts, traffic flowed in one direction: enter by the north gate, leave by the south, or the reverse. No one would turn back. Some interpreters see in this a picture of worship that moves people forward and changes them. The prince would go in among them and come out among them.

Every morning a year-old lamb without defect would be offered, a continual reminder of God's presence. The prince could give gifts of land to his sons, but he could not oppress the people by taking their inheritance, continuing the justice theme of chapter 45. The chapter ends with the temple kitchens. In the New Testament, Hebrews 10:25 urges believers not to forsake assembling together, but to encourage one another.

Show What You Know

  1. How did the prince's role differ from the priests'?

  2. What was the rule for entering and leaving at the feasts?
