Ezekiel 46 · Grade 5
Ordered Worship
Read and Think
Ezekiel 46 continues the laws of worship in the new temple. The inner east gate would open only on Sabbaths and new moons. The prince would stand at the gatepost and worship at the threshold while the priests offered his burnt offering and peace offerings. The prince was honored, but he was not a priest; he worshiped as one of God's people.
The people of the land would worship at the door of that gate before Yahweh on the Sabbaths and on the new moons. At the great feasts, traffic flowed in one direction: enter by the north gate, leave by the south, or the reverse. No one would turn back. Some interpreters see in this a picture of worship that moves people forward and changes them. The prince would go in among them and come out among them.
Every morning a year-old lamb without defect would be offered, a continual reminder of God's presence. The prince could give gifts of land to his sons, but he could not oppress the people by taking their inheritance, continuing the justice theme of chapter 45. The chapter ends with the temple kitchens. In the New Testament, Hebrews 10:25 urges believers not to forsake assembling together, but to encourage one another.
