Ezekiel 45 · Grade 5
Justice in the Land
Read and Think
Ezekiel 45 moves from the temple to the land around it. A sacred district, the holy offering, would be set apart for Yahweh, with the sanctuary at its center, the priests' land around it, and the Levites' land next. Beside it lay land for the city. On either side the prince received his own portion. The arrangement put God at the center of national life.
The prince's land had a purpose: so the princes would no longer oppress God's people. Israel's history was full of kings who seized land, like Ahab taking Naboth's vineyard in 1 Kings 21. God's call for the princes to remove violence and plunder and to do justice and righteousness echoes the earlier prophets. Justice was not an add-on to worship; it was part of it.
God required just balances, a just ephah, and a just bath. Amos and Micah had condemned dishonest scales. The people's offerings would go to the prince, who would supply sacrifices for the feasts, new moons, and Sabbaths. The chapter ends with a new-year cleansing of the sanctuary, Passover in the first month, and a feast in the seventh month. In the New Testament, Luke 16:10 says: He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much.
