Faithful Priests

Name Date

Ezekiel says the east gate was shut. God said it must stay shut, because the God of Israel had entered by it.

God's glory filled the temple again, and Ezekiel fell on his face. God told him to pay close attention to the rules for his house.

Some Levites had turned to idols, so they would only be helpers. But the priests from Zadok had stayed faithful. They would serve God and teach the people the difference between holy and common.

Ezekiel 44 · Grade 4

Yahweh's Glory Filled Yahweh's House

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel says the man brought him back to the outer east gate, and it was shut. God said it would remain shut, because Yahweh, the God of Israel, had entered by it. Only the prince could sit in the gateway to eat before Yahweh.

Then Ezekiel saw Yahweh's glory filling the house again, and he fell on his face. God told him to mark well all the laws of the temple. Israel had let people who did not honor God serve in his sanctuary. Some Levites had gone after idols, so they would serve as gatekeepers and helpers, not as priests at the altar.

The priests descended from Zadok had stayed faithful when Israel went astray. They would come near to serve God. They would wear linen, keep themselves holy, and teach the people the difference between the holy and the common. They would judge fairly. God himself would be their inheritance.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did the east gate remain shut?

  2. What would the Levites who went after idols do?

  3. Why were Zadok's descendants chosen?

  4. What would be the priests' inheritance?

Ezekiel 44 · Grade 5

Faithfulness Rewarded

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 44 begins at the outer east gate, now shut. Because Yahweh's glory had entered through it, no human would walk through it again. The closed gate declared that God had come to stay, never to depart as he had in chapter 10. Only the prince in the vision could sit in the gateway to eat a sacred meal before Yahweh.

Ezekiel again saw Yahweh's glory fill the house and fell on his face. God then laid out who could serve in the sanctuary. In the past, Israel had brought in foreigners, uncircumcised in heart and in flesh, to serve in God's holy place. The Levites who had led Israel into idolatry would bear their shame. They would still serve as gatekeepers and slaughter offerings for the people, but they would not come near the most holy things.

By contrast, the sons of Zadok had kept charge of the sanctuary when Israel went astray. They would draw near to minister before God, wearing linen and keeping strict rules of holiness. Their task included teaching. God says: They shall teach my people the difference between the holy and the common, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean. This corrected the very failure condemned in chapter 22. They would receive no land, for God said he would be their inheritance. In the New Testament, 1 Peter 2:9 calls believers a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the shut east gate declare?

  2. What role did the unfaithful Levites receive?

  3. What earlier failure would the Zadokite priests correct?

  4. Which New Testament verse calls believers a royal priesthood?
