The Man with the Measuring Reed

Name Date

Read and Think

In the twenty-fifth year of the exile, fourteen years after Jerusalem fell, Ezekiel says the hand of Yahweh came on him. In visions of God he was taken to a very high mountain in Israel. To the south he saw something like the frame of a city.

A man whose appearance was like bronze stood in the gate, holding a linen cord and a measuring reed. He told Ezekiel to see with his eyes, hear with his ears, and set his heart on everything, so he could tell the house of Israel.

The man measured the outer wall and the east gate with its guard rooms and porch. He measured the outer court, the north and south gates, and the inner court. He showed Ezekiel the tables for offerings, the rooms for singers and priests, and the altar standing before the house.

Ezekiel 40 · Grade 5

A Blueprint of Hope

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapters 40-48 form the final vision of Ezekiel, dated in the twenty-fifth year of the exile. Ezekiel says that in visions of God he was brought to a very high mountain in Israel. Fourteen years earlier Jerusalem's temple had been burned. In chapters 8-11 Ezekiel had seen God's glory leave the temple. Now he would see a new temple to which the glory would return.

A heavenly guide whose appearance was like bronze led the tour with a measuring reed of about ten and a half feet. He told Ezekiel to see, hear, and set his heart on all he would be shown, then to declare it to Israel. Chapter 40 measures the outer wall, three outer gates, the outer court, three inner gates, the tables for offerings, the rooms for singers and priests, and the inner court.

The precise symmetry stands out: gates mirror one another, and the inner court is a perfect square of one hundred cubits with the altar at its center. Interpreters read the vision in different ways, as a literal future temple, a symbolic picture of God's perfect worship, or a hope fulfilled in the New Testament. In the New Testament, Revelation 21:15 describes an angel with a golden reed to measure the holy city.

Show What You Know

  1. How does chapters 40-48 relate to chapters 8-11?

  2. About how long was the measuring reed?

  3. What are three ways interpreters read this vision?

  4. Which New Testament verse describes a golden reed measuring the holy city?
