Ezekiel 39 · Grade 5

The Face of God Revealed

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 39 completes the Gog oracle. God would turn Gog around, strike the bow and arrows from his hands, and bring him down on the mountains of Israel. Fire would fall on Magog and on those living securely in the coastlands. God's central purpose repeats. God says: I will make my holy name known among my people Israel. Then the nations will know that I am Yahweh, the Holy One in Israel.

The aftermath is told in pictures of total victory. Israel would use the enemy's weapons as fuel for seven years and spend seven months cleansing the land, burying the fallen in a valley named Hamon Gog. A sacrificial feast for birds and beasts pictures the completeness of God's triumph. The number seven, repeated, suggests fullness and finality.

The chapter ends by gathering up the whole book's message. God would reverse the captivity of Jacob and have mercy on all Israel. The nations would understand that Israel went into exile for its iniquity, when God hid his face from them. Now God would gather them all, leaving none behind. I won't hide my face from them any more, for I have poured out my Spirit on the house of Israel. In the New Testament, Acts 2:17 says: It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh.
