Ezekiel 35 · Grade 4

A Lasting Hatred

Name Date

Read and Think

God told Ezekiel to set his face against Mount Seir, the hill country of Edom. Edom's people came from Esau, Jacob's twin brother. Yet Edom kept a perpetual hatred toward Israel. When Jerusalem fell, Edom helped the enemy in the time of Israel's disaster.

Edom also wanted to take over Israel and Judah. They said the two nations would be theirs, even though Yahweh was there. They boasted against God and multiplied words against him. God said he had heard every one.

Edom had rejoiced when Israel's inheritance became desolate. So God said Mount Seir would become desolate too. What Edom did to others would come back on Edom. Then Edom would know that God is Yahweh.

Ezekiel 35 · Grade 5

Edom's Grudge

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 35 returns to Edom, already addressed in chapter 25, as a dark backdrop to the promises of chapter 36. Mount Seir is set against the mountains of Israel. Edom's sin was a perpetual hatred, an old grudge reaching back to the conflict between Esau and Jacob in Genesis. When Jerusalem fell, Edom handed Israelites over to the enemy in the time of the iniquity of the end. Obadiah and Psalm 137 also remember Edom's betrayal.

Edom's ambition was to take both Israel and Judah. They said, These two nations and these two countries will be mine. Their mistake was forgetting that Yahweh was there. The land was not empty for the taking; it belonged to God. Edom's boasting against Israel was really boasting against God, who said, I have heard it.

God's judgment followed the principle of measure for measure. Because Edom rejoiced over Israel's desolation, Mount Seir would become desolate. The chapter repeats four times that Edom would know that God is Yahweh. In the New Testament, Galatians 6:7 says: Don't be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

Show What You Know

  1. Why is chapter 35 placed just before chapter 36?

  2. Where does Edom's grudge go back to?

  3. What did Edom forget when planning to take the land?

  4. Which New Testament verse says whatever a man sows he will reap?

  1. Edom's grudge lasted for generations. Why is forgiveness so important for breaking cycles of hatred?

  2. Galatians 6:7 says we reap what we sow. How does this principle show up in everyday life?

Memory Verse

As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it was desolate, so I will do to you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir, and all Edom, even all of it. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.’”
