Ezekiel 33 · Grade 5
The Watchman and the Turning
Read and Think
Ezekiel 33 is a hinge in the book. It repeats Ezekiel's commission as watchman from chapter 3 and the teaching on responsibility from chapter 18, just before news of Jerusalem's fall arrives. A watchman who sees the sword coming and blows the trumpet has done his duty. If he stays silent, the blood of the people is on his hands. Ezekiel's task was to warn faithfully, whatever the response.
The center of the chapter is one of the most tender verses in the prophets. God tells Ezekiel to say that he has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. God then pleads with the people, asking why the house of Israel will die. The people complained that the way of the Lord is not fair. God answered that he judges each person by his ways, and anyone who turns from sin will live.
In the twelfth year, on the fifth day of the tenth month, a fugitive arrived with the words: The city has been defeated. The silence God had placed on Ezekiel in chapter 3 was lifted. Yet the exiles treated his preaching like entertainment, like a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice. In the New Testament, James 1:22 says: But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.
