Like a Cedar of Lebanon

Name Date

Read the Story

God asked Pharaoh who he was like in his greatness. Then God told about Assyria. It was like a great cedar tree in Lebanon.

The tree grew tall because its roots were by many waters. Birds nested in its branches. Nations lived in its shade. Even the trees of Eden envied it.

But the tree became proud of its height. So God let it be cut down. The nations shook when it fell. God said Pharaoh would fall the same way.

Whom Are You Like?

Name Date

Read and Think

In the eleventh year, God told Ezekiel to ask Pharaoh whom he was like in his greatness. Then God described Assyria, the great empire before Babylon, as a magnificent cedar of Lebanon. It was tall, with beautiful branches and thick shade.

Its roots were by many waters, so it grew higher than all the trees of the field. All the birds of the sky made nests in its boughs, and all great nations lived under its shadow. God said he made it beautiful, so that the trees of Eden envied it.

But because its heart was lifted up in its height, God handed it over to a mighty ruler. Foreigners cut it down, and its branches lay broken on every mountain. The nations shook at the sound of its fall. Pharaoh was told that he would be brought down just like Assyria.

Ezekiel 31 · Grade 5

The Cedar That Fell

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 31 is dated two months after the broken-arm oracle. God told Ezekiel to ask Pharaoh whom he was like in his greatness. The answer was a history lesson. Assyria had once been the greatest empire in the world, yet God said it had been cut down. If Assyria could fall, so could Egypt.

Assyria is pictured as a cedar of Lebanon, the most prized tree of the ancient world. The waters nourished it, and the deep made it grow tall. Birds nested in its boughs, animals bore young beneath it, and all great nations lived in its shade. God himself made it beautiful, so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied it. Similar imagery appears in Daniel 4, where Nebuchadnezzar is a great tree.

The turn comes in verse 10: because its heart was lifted up in its height, God delivered it to the mighty one of the nations. Strangers cut it down and left it. The fall shook the nations, a warning that no tree by the waters should exalt itself in its height. In the New Testament, 1 Peter 5:5 says that God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did God point Pharaoh to Assyria's history?

  2. Who made the cedar beautiful?

  3. What other book uses a great-tree image for a king?

  4. Which New Testament verse says God gives grace to the humble?
