Alas for the Day

Name Date

Read and Think

God told Ezekiel to wail, Alas for the day! The day of Yahweh was near, a day of clouds and a time of judgment for the nations. Egypt and its allies, Cush, Put, Lud, and others, would fall together.

God would end Egypt's great multitudes by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He would dry up the Nile canals and destroy the idols of Memphis. City after city, from Zoan in the north to No, or Thebes, in the south, would be humbled.

In the eleventh year, God told Ezekiel that he had broken Pharaoh's arm. It would not be bound up to hold a sword again. God would strengthen the arms of Babylon's king and break both of Pharaoh's arms. When Egypt was scattered, they would know that God is Yahweh.

Ezekiel 30 · Grade 5

Breaking Pharaoh's Arm

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 30 opens with the only undated oracle against Egypt. God told Ezekiel to wail, Alas for the day! For the day is near, even Yahweh's day. The day of the Lord in the prophets is a time when God steps into history to judge. Here it falls on Egypt and its allies: Cush, Put, Lud, Libya, and the people of the land in league with them.

Verses 13-19 march through Egypt's major cities: Memphis, Pathros, Zoan, No (Thebes), Sin (Pelusium), Aven (On), Pibeseth, and Tehaphnehes. God would destroy the idols and make the images cease from Memphis. Egypt's religion and power were closely tied; when the cities fell, the gods behind them were shown to be nothing.

The second oracle is dated in the eleventh year. God said he had broken Pharaoh's arm, and it would not be bound up. God would strengthen Babylon's arms and put his sword in its hand. In the New Testament, Romans 13:1 says that there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God.

Show What You Know

  1. What is the day of the Lord in the prophets?

  2. Why does the chapter list so many Egyptian cities?

  3. What did God say about Pharaoh's arm?

  4. Which New Testament verse says authority comes from God?
