The Watchman

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Ezekiel to eat the scroll and then go speak to the house of Israel. Ezekiel ate it, and it was as sweet as honey. God said the people would not listen. So God made Ezekiel's forehead hard, like a diamond, so he would not be afraid.

The Spirit lifted Ezekiel up. He heard a loud voice say, Blessed be Yahweh's glory from his place. He went to the captives at Tel Aviv and sat with them seven days.

Then God made Ezekiel a watchman. A watchman stands on the wall and warns the city. Ezekiel was to warn the people so they could turn back to God.

Memory Verse

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman to the house of Israel. Therefore hear the word from my mouth, and warn them from me.

Ezekiel 3 · Grade 4

Hear the Word and Warn Them

Name Date

Read and Think

God tells Ezekiel to eat the scroll and fill his belly with it. Ezekiel ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in his mouth. God's words had to be inside Ezekiel before he could give them to others.

God explains that Ezekiel was not sent to people with a hard language. He was sent to his own people, but they would not listen, because they would not listen to God. So God made Ezekiel's forehead like a diamond, harder than flint. The Spirit lifted Ezekiel, and he went to the captives at Tel Aviv by the river Chebar.

After seven days God says he has made Ezekiel a watchman to the house of Israel. He must hear the word and warn them. If Ezekiel warned people, he had done his part, even if they did not turn. Later Ezekiel saw Yahweh's glory in the plain, and God told him he would speak when God opened his mouth.

Ezekiel 3 · Grade 5

A Watchman to the House of Israel

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 3 begins with a strange command: eat this scroll. Ezekiel obeyed, and he says it was as sweet as honey in his mouth. The message on the scroll was full of lamentation and woe, yet receiving God's word was sweet. Psalm 119 and Jeremiah 15 use similar pictures of God's words tasting good.

God was honest about the task. If Ezekiel had been sent to foreigners with a hard language, they would have listened. But the house of Israel was obstinate and hard-hearted. God answered hard hearts with a firm prophet. He made Ezekiel's forehead as a diamond, harder than flint. Then the Spirit lifted Ezekiel, and he heard, Blessed be Yahweh's glory from his place. He sat overwhelmed among the captives at Tel Aviv for seven days.

Then God gave Ezekiel his job title: watchman to the house of Israel. A city watchman saw danger first and sounded the alarm. Ezekiel's duty was to hear the word from God's mouth and warn them. God held him responsible for warning; each listener was responsible for turning. The chapter ends with Ezekiel bound inside his house, unable to speak except when God opened his mouth. In the New Testament, Hebrews 13:17 speaks of leaders who watch on behalf of souls: for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account.

Show What You Know

  1. Why is it surprising that the scroll tasted sweet?

  2. Who would have listened more easily than Israel?

  3. What was Ezekiel responsible for, and what were the listeners responsible for?

  4. What New Testament verse speaks of leaders who watch over souls?
