Ezekiel 27 · Grade 5

Lament for a Sinking Ship

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 27 is a lamentation, a funeral song in poetic form, over Tyre. It pictures the city as a splendid merchant ship. The best materials of the known world built it: cypress from Senir, cedar from Lebanon, oak from Bashan, ivory, and embroidered linen from Egypt. Skilled men from Sidon, Arvad, and Gebal crewed it. Tyre said, I am perfect in beauty.

Verses 12-25 give one of the most detailed trade lists in ancient literature. Tarshish, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, Dedan, Arabia, Sheba, and many more traded silver, tin, bronze, horses, ivory, wool, spices, gold, and precious stones. Tragically, the list includes the trading of persons of men, a reminder that great wealth sometimes rested on great injustice. The ships of Tarshish were Tyre's caravans, and it was made very glorious in the heart of the seas.

Then the east wind broke the ship in the heart of the seas. The sailors on shore threw dust on their heads and wailed. Kings were horribly afraid, and the merchants hissed at Tyre's terrible end. All of Tyre's glory was lost in a moment. In the New Testament, Matthew 16:26 says: For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life?
