Ezekiel 26 · Grade 4

The Noise of Your Songs

Name Date

Read and Think

In the eleventh year, God spoke to Ezekiel about Tyre. Tyre was a wealthy trading city built partly on the coast and partly on an island just offshore. When Jerusalem fell, Tyre said Aha! It thought Jerusalem's loss meant more trade and riches for itself.

God said he would bring many nations against Tyre, as the sea causes its waves to come up. Nebuchadnezzar would come with horses, chariots, and a great army. He would break down Tyre's walls and towers, and its treasures would be taken.

Tyre would become a bare rock, a place for the spreading of nets in the middle of the sea. The noise of its songs and harps would stop. The princes of the sea would step down from their thrones and mourn. Tyre's story warns that riches and pride cannot protect anyone from God's judgment.

  2. How did God describe the nations coming against Tyre?

Ezekiel 26 · Grade 5

A Bare Rock in the Sea

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 26 begins three chapters about Tyre, the great Phoenician seaport. Tyre had a mainland city and a fortress island about half a mile offshore. It controlled trade across the Mediterranean. When Jerusalem fell, Tyre said Aha! and called Jerusalem the gate of the peoples, now broken. Tyre expected to gain trade once Jerusalem was gone.

God answered with a picture of the sea itself rising against Tyre: many nations would come up like waves. God named Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon as one who would come against Tyre. God said Tyre's stones and timber would be laid in the water and the site would become a bare rock for drying nets.

The chapter ends with a lament. The noise of Tyre's songs would cease, and its harps would fall silent. The princes of the sea would tremble, astonished that the great city was gone. Tyre's pride rested on wealth and location, both of which seemed secure. In the New Testament, Revelation 18 echoes this lament over a proud trading city. In the New Testament, 1 Timothy 6:17 tells the rich not to be arrogant and not to set their hope on riches, but on the living God.

Show What You Know

  1. What made Tyre powerful?

  2. How did Tyre react to Jerusalem's fall?

  3. Whom did God name as coming against Tyre?
