Ezekiel 25 · Grade 4

They Will Know That I Am Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 25 begins a long section of messages to the nations, chapters 25 to 32. Ammon had said Aha! when God's sanctuary was profaned, the land of Israel was made desolate, and Judah went into captivity. They clapped their hands and rejoiced over Israel's pain. God said their land would become pasture for camels and flocks.

Moab and Seir said the house of Judah was like all the nations. They meant Israel's God was no different from other gods. Edom, Israel's brother nation descended from Esau, took vengeance on Judah. The Philistines acted with ancient hatred, wanting to destroy.

God said he would judge each nation. His judgment on Edom would come by the hand of his people Israel. The repeated phrase in this chapter is that they will know that God is Yahweh. God wanted the nations to understand that he is the true God and that he cares how his people are treated.

Ezekiel 25 · Grade 5

Aha! Over a Neighbor's Ruin

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 25 opens the oracles against the nations, which run through chapter 32 and sit between the fall of Jerusalem and the message of hope. God addressed four of Judah's neighbors: Ammon and Moab to the east, Edom to the south, and Philistia to the west. Each had responded to Judah's disaster with contempt rather than compassion.

Ammon said Aha! against God's sanctuary when it was profaned and clapped its hands with all the despite of its soul. Moab and Seir claimed that the house of Judah is like all the nations, denying that Yahweh was unique. Edom, Israel's brother through Esau, took vengeance and greatly offended. The Philistines acted with perpetual hostility. Their sins were not only military acts but attitudes: gloating, scorn, and lasting hatred.

The refrain throughout is that they will know that God is Yahweh. The fall of Jerusalem did not mean Yahweh was weak; he was still ruler over every nation. God said he would lay his vengeance on Edom by the hand of his people Israel, showing that Israel's story was not over. The opposite of Ammon's Aha! is compassion. In the New Testament, Romans 12:15 says: Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

  1. Where do the oracles against the nations fit in the book?

  2. What attitudes did the nations show toward Judah?

  4. Which New Testament verse gives the opposite of Ammon's response?
