Ezekiel 25 · Grade 5
Aha! Over a Neighbor's Ruin
Read and Think
Ezekiel 25 opens the oracles against the nations, which run through chapter 32 and sit between the fall of Jerusalem and the message of hope. God addressed four of Judah's neighbors: Ammon and Moab to the east, Edom to the south, and Philistia to the west. Each had responded to Judah's disaster with contempt rather than compassion.
Ammon said Aha! against God's sanctuary when it was profaned and clapped its hands with all the despite of its soul. Moab and Seir claimed that the house of Judah is like all the nations, denying that Yahweh was unique. Edom, Israel's brother through Esau, took vengeance and greatly offended. The Philistines acted with perpetual hostility. Their sins were not only military acts but attitudes: gloating, scorn, and lasting hatred.
The refrain throughout is that they will know that God is Yahweh. The fall of Jerusalem did not mean Yahweh was weak; he was still ruler over every nation. God said he would lay his vengeance on Edom by the hand of his people Israel, showing that Israel's story was not over. The opposite of Ammon's Aha! is compassion. In the New Testament, Romans 12:15 says: Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.
